Brief Bio

Howard is an archaeologist and author with special interest in Egypt and Coptic studies (The Early Christian Period in Egypt). He has been visiting Egypt for over  20years where he has taken up the many unique opportunities to visit and stay in some of the most isolated desert areas in Egypt.

His interest in photography started in the 1960’s, using a standard Kodak camera in black and white film. His first published photograph at 17 (1964) was used on the front page of the South Wales Evening Post. After a few years of amateur ‘dabbling’ in experimental film processing, Howard started on the academic route of colleges and Universities, thus leaving photography in the side lines.

His interest in Photography was always there and some years ago acquired a waterproof camera, and being one of the original Langland/Gower surfers himself from the 1960’s, started to take shots of surfers in action while swimming out amongst them.

While Howard has been visiting the deserts of Egypt for some years, originally he only was only armed with a basic digital camera, but once he had acquired an SLR system, his interest in photography and photographic experimentation returned.

The Exhibition ‘Home and Away’ is a reflection of his visits and interaction with his fascination of Egypt and its culture and his lifelong attraction to the Gower Peninsula.

In 1971 Howard was appointed as the first full-time National Trust warden on Gower, living for some years at Whiteford Burrows, a National Nature Reserve on North Gower

In 1982, Howard wrote ‘Journey Through Gower’, a book on the history, archaeology and the splendours Gower has to offer. His two other published books are on the mysteries surrounding the Giza Pyramid Necropolis in Egypt.

Howard has two grown up daughters and is an associate tutor in archaeology and Coptic Studies for the Department of Adult Continuing Education, Swansea University.

Howard's past experiences and achievements include being a member of the Welsh swim squad in the 1960's - langland Bay surf voluntary lifeguard throughout the 1960's and 1970's - one of the original long-board riders of the 1960's - instigator of Triathletes Swansea club in the 1980's - Welsh Triathlon Vet champion holder 1986-88 and competing in over 150 triathlons and duathlons
