The Virtual Reconstruction and 3D rendering of a Coptic Period Monastic site in Aswan

Continually updated Photographic record available here

February 2012 - latest excavation finds by Spanish Universty at Qubbat el-Hawa

Latest flash visual overview with plans from University of Jean' Spain

The site of the Coptic monastery is situated on the slope of the hill of Qubbat al-Hawā, to the west of Aswan, which is honeycombed with ancient rock-cut tombs of local high officials of the 6th Dynasty. These tombs are arranged on four levels , of which the Coptic Church is located on the uppermost level, in front of tomb Khunes (QH 34h) and was formerly part of a monastic settlement, the material remains of which are only partly documented

The Project
Aims and objectives:
Utilising previous data and plans combined with newly discovered information and reconstructed plans based on that information, to reconstruct a virtual 3D rendering of the church site. The reconstruction will be greatly enhanced by recent high resolution imagery captured at the site, combined with on-site visits revealing hitherto unknown inscriptions and wall paintings.
